Domestic Tree Services

A domestic tree surgeon assesses and carries out tree work around homes, gardens and private properties. This can include tree pruning, crown reduction, crown lifting, crown thinning, deadwood removal, tree felling, sectional dismantling and stump grinding.

The right approach depends on the tree’s species, condition, size and position. Access, nearby buildings and neighbouring properties also need to be considered. We assess these factors before recommending any work, so a tree is not reduced or removed simply because it has become inconvenient.

The cost of domestic tree surgery depends on the tree, the work required and how straightforward the site is to access. A small pruning job will usually involve less time and equipment than dismantling a large tree in sections beside a house.

It is sensible to hire a tree surgeon when work involves large branches, climbing, chainsaws or a tree close to a house, road, power line or neighbouring property. Professional advice is also worthwhile after storm damage, when branches have started to fail or when you are unsure what type of pruning a tree needs.

Not every problem calls for removal. Sometimes a careful crown reduction, removal of deadwood or better clearance beneath the canopy is enough. We can inspect the tree and explain the practical options before any decision is made.

Anyone carrying out professional tree work should be trained and competent for the particular job involved. The relevant training may cover chainsaw use, tree climbing, aerial rescue, machinery and work at height.

A tree surgeon should carry suitable public liability insurance for the work being undertaken. Where a company employs staff, appropriate employers’ liability cover should also be in place.

The terms overlap, but they can describe slightly different parts of tree care. “Tree surgeon” is commonly used for the practical work carried out on trees, such as pruning, climbing, dismantling and felling. “Arborist” is a broader term that can also include tree assessment, health, management and advice.

Many experienced tree professionals carry out both types of work. The most important questions are whether the contractor understands the tree, has suitable training and insurance, and can explain why the proposed work is appropriate.

Tree surgeons can remove stumps, but stump grinding is not always included automatically when a tree is felled. It is a separate process that grinds the stump below ground level, making it easier to reinstate or reuse the space. It does not usually remove the entire root system.

Before accepting a quotation, check whether stump grinding, timber removal and woodchip clearance are included. If you would prefer to keep logs or woodchip for use in the garden, that can also be discussed before work begins.

Permission may be required if the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or stands within a conservation area. Work to a tree covered by a TPO normally requires consent from the local planning authority unless a specific exemption applies.

For certain work to an unprotected tree in a conservation area, the council must normally be given six weeks’ notice. The rules can vary according to the tree and circumstances, so it is best to check before work starts.
